2025-2026

The New SSC Members

As per NCISM rules and guidelines, the 4་་ Sowa-Rigpa Student Council Member election was held on 20་་ November 2025 in the presence of CIHTS Student Dean Geshe Tenzin Norbu. Total 5 student has been elected for the members and among them, Ms. Tenzin Choesangwas elected for the President of SSC 4་་ term.

The handing over of 3rd to 4་་ term members has been held on 30་་ December at Menla Committee Hall, Sowa-Rigpa Bhawan with the presence of Dean, HoD, the former and the new advisor of SSC sMenrampa (Dr) Karma Choedon la and other SSC members. The new SSC member has to follow the SSC Rules 2026 prescribed by the NCSIM Gazette Notification. The tenure of 4་་ SSC is one year from 30་་ December 2025 till 29་་ December 2026.

3 Days rGyud-bZhi Oral Transmission

Sowa-Rigpa Medicine has a unique tradition of oral transmission of lineage through reciting thorough fundamental texts of rGyudbZhi; the four Tantras and other classical texts. With the request of BSRMS Professional 1st year (2025-2027) student, Senior Professor Dr. Lobsang Tenzin Rakdho has gracefully accepted to give oral transmission of rGyudbZhi text to the students and the faculties. Prof. Lobsang Tenzin has received this transmission from the most senior reverence Khenpo TroruTsenamRinpche from Tibet in 1980. 

The actual 3 days oral transmission program has begun on 18་་ December 2025 with the Medicine Buddha prayer and Mandala offerings by the student and the teaching faculty of Sowa-Rigpa. Total 35 medical students and 4 teaching faculty has participated in this program. On behalf of all the participants, the class monitor and the member of Sowa-Rigpa Student Council (SSC) has kindly offered Khatak and mandala offering as a gratitude to the Prof. Dr Lobsang Tenzin. The organizer also thanked the Dean and HoD for their support and Dr. Penpa Tsering for his guidance organizing this program.

Special Lecture series

Upon the request of the Sowa-Rigpa faculty members, Senior Professor Dr. Lobsang Tenzin Rakdho has kindly consented to impart special teachings on sMen Che Cha Lag Chogye – “SorigKhogbugKhyungchen Dingwa”. The classes are being conducted every Saturday from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, commencing from 29th November 2025.

BSRMS students, Intern Doctors, Medical Officers, teaching faculty members, and researchers of the Sowa-Rigpa system are actively participating in this special lecture series.

Sowa-Rigpa Delegation at National Naturopathy Day

With an official invitation from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth University, Dr. Tsering Tsamchoe, on behalf of Prof. Wangchuk Dorjee Negi, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of CIHTS, participated in the 8th National Naturopathy Day cum International Workshop on “Healthcare through Natural Medicine”, held at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth University, Varanasi, on 18 November 2025.

Dr. Tsamchoe, Assistant Professor, Department of Sowa-Rigpa, delivered a talk on the Sowa-Rigpa system of Medicine, introducing the ancient Traditional Tibetan Medicine, its unique principles, medical colleges, and the academic course curriculum of Sowa-Rigpa. He also highlighted that new Sowa-Rigpa hospitals and OPD clinics are being established across India due to its growing popularity, increasing patient demand, and cost-effectiveness.

The programme was organized by the Department of Yoga & Natural Medicine, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth University, Varanasi, and was attended by scholars from the Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy systems of medicine.

The participation of CIHTS in the workshop provided a valuable platform for interdisciplinary academic exchange and enhanced awareness of the Sowa-Rigpa system of Medicine among scholars of allied traditional healthcare systems. The lecture contributed to a deeper understanding of Traditional Tibetan Medicine, its structured education system, and its expanding clinical relevance in India. The programme also strengthened academic networking and highlighted the increasing role of Sowa-Rigpa as a cost-effective and holistic healthcare system within the broader framework of traditional and natural medicine.

Free Eye screening camp

With reference to the official notice dated 6 November 2025, a Free Eye Screening Camp was organized at Kamalsheel Bhawan, CIHTS, by R. J. Sankara Eye Hospital, Varanasi, on 7th, 8th, and 9th November 2025.

The programme was coordinated by the Head and the Dean of the Department of Sowa-Rigpa and was primarily conducted for the students and staff members of the Institute with the objective of promoting eye health awareness and facilitating early detection of vision-related problems.

During the camp, a total of 159 students and staff members participated and availed themselves of RBH cards for expert consultation at R. J. Sankara Eye Hospital, Varanasi.

The Free Eye Screening Camp was successfully conducted and received an encouraging response from both students and staff members. The initiative significantly contributed to raising awareness about eye health and enabled early identification of potential vision-related issues. By facilitating access to RBH cards for specialized consultation at R. J. Sankara Eye Hospital, the programme ensured timely referral and continuity of eye care. Overall, the camp fulfilled its objectives and reinforced the Institute’s commitment to the health and well-being of its academic community.

Talk on “Tibetan Medicine in Tibet: Photographs and Insights from Tibet, 2014-2024”

The Department of Sowa-Rigpa organized a talk series in which Stephan Kloos, Deputy Director of the Institute for Social Anthropology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, delivered a lecture titled “Tibetan Medicine in Tibet: Photographs and Insights from Tibet, 2014–2024.” The session was held at SambhotBhawan, Hall-II, on 4 November 2025 and was attended by Sowa-Rigpa faculty members, staff, and students.Dr.DorjeeDamdul, Dean of the Faculty, formally expressed his gratitude to Stephan Kloos for sharing his valuable knowledge and experiences during the session.

One Day Sowa-Rigpa Student Seminar

The Sowa-Rigpa Student Council (SSC), in collaboration with BSRMS Prof. IInd (Junior), organized a one-day Student Seminar on MateriaMedica at Ananthapindika Hall, CIHTS, on 11 October 2025. The seminar commenced with an opening session introducing the theme, aims, and objectives of the programme. The session was graciously presided over by Dr. Ngawang Tenphel, Student Dean.

During the seminar, Dr. NgawangKunkhen delivered a scholarly talk on the Three SorignGo-Bum, followed by four student presentations on various topics related to Sowa-RigpaMateriaMedica. In addition, two academic articles on SorigMateriaMedica were presented by the students.

The closing session was graciously presided over by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. WangchukDorjeeNegi gave a concluding lecture and later distributed certificates to all the participants.

Preventive Health Check-up

In accordance with Notification No.CIHTS/NO/2025/513, dated 24/09/2025, the Department of Sowa-Rigpa organized a Preventive Health Check-up Program for all theSafai Walla staff of CIHTS on 27th September2025 at Yuthog Hospital, Department of Sowa-Rigpa.

This program was organized under the guidance of the Dean and Head, Department of Sowa-Rigpa, and coordinated by Hospital In-charge, Dr. Tsering Tsamchoe.  Dr. Karma Tharchin and Dr. Tsewang Sangmo have taken responsibilities for overall health consultations and preventive health advice, whileLab Technician Mr. Patilconducted all Laboratory tests.

The initiative aimed to promote preventive healthcare awareness, encourage early diagnosis, and emphasize the importance of maintaining overall well-being among the supporting staff of the Institute.

15 Days Induction Program for newly admitted BSRMS students (Academic year 2025-2027)

The Yuthog Sowa-Rigpa Medical College organized a 15-day Induction Programme for the newly admitted BSRMS First Year students of the Academic Year 2025–2027 at Sambhot Bhawan, CIHTS. The programme was conducted in accordance with the NCISM Act and Regulations, with the objective of familiarizing students with the Institute and College campus, academic departments, available facilities, and the structure of the BSRMS course.

The Induction Programme aimed to help newly admitted students adjust to the new academic environment, feel comfortable within the institution, and enable faculty members to understand the students and their areas of interest. As per the prescribed guidelines, the programme covered various academic and orientation topics, campus visits, and other related activities, amounting to a total of 90 hours.

Sowa-Rigpa Day Celebration

On 11 September 2025, the 7th Sowa-Rigpa Day was celebrated across the country with the aim of preserving, promoting, and propagating the Traditional Tibetan Sowa-Rigpa System of Medicine. The programme was jointly organized by the Department of Sowa-Rigpa and the Sowa-Rigpa Student Council, CIHTS.

The programme commenced with the Medicine Buddha Prayer and Tsog Offering, followed by a brief inaugural session held at AnathPindika Guest House, CIHTS. The Programme Coordinator, Dr. Tsering Tsamchoe, read out the Sowa-Rigpa Day message of the President BUSS, NCISM and Chairman, Central Council of Tibetan Medicine, Dharamsala.

During the programme, the students shared their knowledge and field experiences of the medical excursion to Tawang.Dr. Ngawang Kunchen presented a detailed tour report and highlighted the academic and practical significance of medical excursions.

The programme continued with various activities, including a quiz competition, first aid techniques demonstration, inter-class games, and cultural performances. The celebration concluded successfully with prize distribution and a vote of thanks by Dr. Dorjee Damdul, Dean, Faculty of Sowa-Rigpa.

BSRMS Second Professional Medical Excursion: Tawang 2025

As per NCISM guidelines and the prescribed academic curriculum, the BSRMS Professional Second Year students successfully completed a 20-day medical excursion to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, from 3rd to 23rd August 2025.

The primary objective of the medical excursion was to identify high-altitude Sowa-Rigpa medicinal plants, along with an understanding of their characteristics, therapeutic uses, and ecological significance. In addition, students were exposed to the cultural, geographical, and environmental factors influencing health and disease patterns in high-altitude regions such as Tawang.

The medical excursion successfully achieved its academic and clinical objectives. It significantly contributed to the holistic development of the students and reinforced the importance of field-based learning in traditional medical education.

The Dean and Head of the Department expressed their sincere appreciation to Dr.NgawangKunchen for his effective escort and guiding the program.

Talk on Pharmacovigilance awareness

A Pharmacovigilance Awareness Programme was successfully held at Menla Hall, Yuthog Sowa-Rigpa Medical College & Hospital, CIHTS, Sarnath, Varanasi on 20་་ of March 2026. This program was conducted under the AYUSH Suraksha Programme by the experts from the Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centre, Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University.

The programme started with a traditional welcome ceremony followed by a brief introduction on safety of Sowa-Rigpa Medicine by Dr. Dorjee Damdul, Dean of Sowa-Rigpa. Prof. Anil Kumar Singh spoke about pharmacovigilance in Ayurveda, and Dr. Rohit Sharma explained how to monitor and report side effects of ASU & H drugs. Both the Speakers highlighted the importance of medicine safety in both modern and traditional systems.

An interactive session was also held, where participants asked questions and shared their views. All teaching faculty members, doctors, and intern students attended the programme.

The speakers explained that pharmacovigilance is important for patient safety, maintaining quality, and improving the global acceptance of Sowa-Rigpa.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Dawa Tsering.

Talk on Hospital Management

The Department of Sowa-Rigpa organized a talk on “Hospital Management and its Importance” to all the Medical Officers, teaching faculties and Interns on 1st of Feb. 2025.

Mr. Tsering, Under Secretary of Department of Health, Central Tibetan Administration has given the talk on the aforesaid topic.. He mainly emphasized on the Hospital functions (patient care and managerial function) Role of Hospital and Healthcare Administrators (towards patient and community) Elements ofHospital and Health systems, Hospital Management Information system, SWOT Analysis, the challenges and strategies of Good Hospital Management.

Talk on Management of Psychosomatic Diseases

Under the kind guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Lobsang Tenzin Rakdho, the department has organized a talk on Management of Psychosomatic diseases on 13་་ Feb 2025 at Sambhot Bhawan Conference Hall.

Lopon Jampa from Palpung Sherabling Monastery has kindly accepted the invitation and has shared his experience treating Psychosomatic diseases in the Himalayan region communities. He introduced the different To; the Holistic treatment or the spiritual practice for a different Psychosomatic disease. He stressed the student and the medical practitioner to thoroughly learn the theoretical text and its actual practice which is very beneficial for such patients.

Talk on National and State Health schemes:

 Dr. Sonam Giathen Negi, currently working as a Chief Medical Officer at Jangi, Himachal Pradesh has kindly given a talk on the National and State Health schemes to the BSRMS Interns and senior students during his short visit to Institute campus on 2nd of April 2025. He introduced and interact the student on the National and State health schemes, the opportunities, Role of Traditional Medicine like Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Sowa-Rigpa in public health.  He further emphasized that Integrating systems like Sowa-Rigpa into national health programs not only honours India’s rich medical heritage but also strengthens the country’s ability to manage rising non-communicable diseases. It also enhances the vision of “Health for All” by providing equitable, affordable, and quality healthcare through a culturally accepted, community-based approach. Due to limitation and lack of scientific research and documentations, which affects wider acceptance and policy support, he stressed the student to do more evidence-based studies to validate and integrate such practices effectively. This talk was organized at Sambhot Bhawan conference hall.  (Dr) Karma Chodon coordinated this health talk.

World Health Day

Under the guidance of the Dean and Head of the Sowa-Rigpa Department, the Sowa-Rigpa Student Council (SSC) observed a World Health Day on 7་་ April 2025 with the global theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures”. The event mainly focused on uniqueness of Sowa-Rigpa, preventive health, exhibition on healthy diet and lifestyle, Medicinal plants, Sowa-Rigpa medical products and practical demonstrations of unique therapies.  Modern medical screenings such as BP, Blood group, BMI and Blood sugar test, Eye check-up has also done as a preventive health care. During the event, total 37 nasal therapy, 42 Cupping therapy, 48 Oil massage, and total 25 kyug – emesis therapy and 150 eye check-up has been done on this health day occasion.

Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Wangchuk Dorjee Negi and Registrar Madam Dr Sunita Chandra has kindly graced the event and about 2000 staff, student and visitors joined the event with the positive remarks and feedback.

Nepal Sowa-Rigpa Team Visit

The Nepal based Sowa-Rigpa International Medical College, Principal Dr. Tenzing Jinpa Bhutia along with Chairman, Research Centre for Traditional, Buddhist and Integrative Medicine, Director, Planning and Monitoring, Lumbini Buddhist University, Chairman of Nepal Professional Health Council, Director General, Department of Ayurveda and Alternative Medicine, Member of Sowa-Rigpa Association of Nepal and WFF of Nepal jointly organized a team visit to CIHTS for academic collaboration, discussion and exchange the knowledge in the field of Sowa-Rigpa on 16་་ and 17་་ of December 2024.

Three Days National Seminar on Sowa-Rigpa at CIHTS, Sarnath, Varanasi

The Department of Sowa-Rigpa has organized Three Days National Seminar on Sowa-Rigpa at CIHTS, Sarnath, Varanasi from 20་་ till 22nd December 2024. The theme of the seminar is Clinical aspects of Sowa-Rigpa, Theoretical studies, Research and Methodology. Total 16 experts have invited for the seminar and have covered 16 different topics in total 10 sessions.
