Profile:  Dr. Lhakpa Tsering holds a Ph D. from Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies and he teaches Tibetan Language and Literature in the Department of Tibetan Language and Literature, Faculty of Shabada Vidya of CIHTS. His teaching areas cover adverse range of subject including Tibetan Language grammar, Linguistics, Tibetan – Sanskrit Poetics and Tibetan literature.

Profile:  Lobsang Choedak is pursuing Ph.D. at CIHTS and has been teaching Tibetan language & literature in the department of Tibetan language & literature, Faculty of Shabda Vidya since 2018 as a Guest Faculty. His teaching responsibilities are Tibetan Grammar, Lexicography, Phonetics, Tibetan Poetry, folklore, drama, fiction, World Literature in Tibetan, Sanskrit rasa theory in Tibetan and practical Tibetan poetry writing etc.

He is currently doing research on the topic “An Analysis and Tibetan Translation of the Fifth Chapter ‘Rasa Vivecana’ of the Sarasvatī Kaṇṭhābharaṇa along with the Usages of Rasas in the Jātakamālā of Ăryaśūra”. His research interest includes Sanskrit Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Sanskrit language and literature, Tibetan language and literature. He is a prolific writer in Tibetan.

Jampa Lhundup did Acharya degree and M.Phil in Tibetan Language and Literature from
the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies. Currently, he is pursuing Ph.D. from the same institute, focusing on the “Linguistic Analysis of the History, Evolution and Relationship Between Tibetan and Himalayan Languages.” He teaches in the department of Tibetan Language & Literature, Faculty of Shabda Vidya, specialing in Tibetan Grammar, Linguistics and Tibetan Literature.

He exhibits a keen interest in linguistics, literature and doing translation work in Tibetan, Hindi and English.

He has published numerous articles and translations in various Journals, Websites and New Papers. Additionally, he has authored and translated two books in Tibetan.

Profile:  Jampa Thupten holds a B.Ed. (Pune University), M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Geography from Karnataka University, Dharwad and teaches Geography in the Department of Education, C.T.E. His teaching responsibilities are in various branches of Geography, Practical and Teaching of geography to B.A.B.Ed. (Integrated course) and B.Ed. He has also coordinated various workshops, seminars, webinar etc; at C.T.E; C.I.H.T.S.

His research interest is centred on Urbanisation in Coastal Karnataka: A Geographical Analysis. In this context, he found out various issues related to people living in the coastal areas.

He is interested in making students learn geography through out door by encouraging them to visit outside for various geographical phenomena and relate them with their studies from in-door.

GESHE LOBSANG GYATSO

Profile:  Geshe Lobsang Gyatso is from Drepung Gomang Monastic University Mundgod where he completed Geshe degree, after studing Vinaya, Abhidharma, Madhyamika, Prajnaparamita and epistemology.In addition, he has been a science leadership Fellow (2008-13) from Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (Center for Tibetan Studies), and was awarded certificate on completion for a five-year curriculum in Mathematics, Biology, Neuroscience and Physics from Emory University in U.S.A.

 He is currently working as an Assistant Professor of Buddhist Philosophy and Teaches Science, Math and Tibetan Grammar etc. through Dialectics at Centre for Teacher Education, Faculty of Shabda Vidya.

His research interest is centered on how to teach science, Math, Tibetan grammar through dialectics. Geshe Lobsang also writes on teaching Science, Math and Tibetan Grammar through Dialectics and Epistemology. Geshe Lobsang Gyatso has special interest in organizing workshops on teaching various subjects through dialectics besides reading books

Mr. Abhijeet Gupta

Profile:

Abhijeet Gupta holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, and a Master’s degree in Political Science from Indira Gandhi National Open University. He completed his Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, in 2024. Currently, he serves as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Centre for Teacher Education (CTE). Prior to this role, he taught the Political Science ISC syllabus to senior secondary students.

At CIHTS, his teaching areas include political theory, colonialism in India, the Indian Constitution, international relations, Indian political thought, modern political philosophy, India’s foreign policy, political institutions and processes, and global politics. His research interests encompass educational policies across political regimes, the application of generative AI in education and pedagogy.

He has mentored over 100 students in course and college selection within Delhi University. Additionally, he has published four books on Amazon KDP, targeting early-age students. He shows interest in participating in and organizing quizzes, debates, and essay competitions.

Dr. Dipti Agrawal

Profile:

Dr. Dipti Agrawal earned her Ph.D. in English from the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, with her research on Mahesh Dattani’s plays, later published as a book. She is currently serving as Assistant Professor of English at the शिक्षक शिक्षण केंद्र, Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS), Sarnath, Varanasi.Earlier, she served as Assistant Professor of English at Sunbeam Women’s College Varuna, Varanasi, for eight years, where she also held the position of Head of the Department of English for two years.

Her areas of teaching include History of English Literature, British and American Drama, Modern English Poetry, Indian Writing in English, Communicative English, Grammar, and Writing Skills. Her research interests revolve around modern drama, feminist discourse, gender studies, and Indian English literature.

Dr. Agrawal has directed four of Mahesh Dattani’s plays and has actively participated in various national and international seminars and conferences, where she has presented research papers. She served as the Organising Secretary of the National Seminar sponsored by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) in 2024.Her scholarly work has been published in several national and international journals and as chapters in edited volumes.

Mr. Kishan Shukla

Kishan Shukla completed his Graduation and Post-Graduation from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. He is currently working as an Assistant Professor of Economics at The Centre of Education, CIHTS with over two years of teaching experience at theundergraduate and postgraduate levels.

His teaching areas include Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Economics, and Public Policy. His research interests focus on development economics, energy economics, and sustainable growth, emphasizing the role of policy in promoting inclusive development.

Apart from teaching, he has actively contributed to curriculum enrichment and departmental activities, and regularly participates in seminars, workshops, and academic discussions. He is committed to fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and research orientation among students.

Tashi Dhondup, as a scholar and educator is deeply rooted in Buddhist studies. His academic journey ledhim to achieve Acharya (Master) degree from the renowned Ngagyur Nyingmapa Institute in Bylakuppe,Karnataka, specializing in higher Buddhist studiesand research.His interest in the world of literature andknowledge dissemination began with a year-long editorial role at Ngagyur Rigzod Editorial post.Subsequently, he continued to contribute to the field by working as an editor for NyingmaTreasure(གཏེར་ཆོས།)in Nepal.

Transitioning from editorial pursuits,hispassion for sharing knowledge led to the role of an educator.Hededicatedhimselfto teaching Tibetan language, literature, and Buddhist philosophy in the enrichinglandscapes of Sikkim and Kalimpong. In 2018,heembraced a new chapter inhiscareer by joining theCentral Institute ofHigher Tibetan BuddhistStudies,Sarnath as a Tibetan language and literature teacherin the Department of Education.Hiscommitment lies not only in academic excellence but also in thepreservation and dissemination of the profound teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.

Profile: Anurag Tripathi did his Ph.D. from Udai Pratap Autonomous College, Varanasi. He is currently working as Assistant Professor of Hindi in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Faculty of Shabda Vidya. His teaching area involves Hindi fiction, Modern poetry, History of Hindi Literature, Grammar and Poetics. Apart from this, he has made a significant contribution in designing the curriculum.

His research interest is centered on Modern Hindi Literature and Buddhist philosophy and Feminist studies. He has expertise in Chhayavad, Hindi Criticism, Linguistics, Indian and Western Poetry.

Keeping in mind the innovations around language and new approaches to teaching-learning, he organizes workshops, seminars, debate, and essay writing competitions from time to time.

ANIMESH PRAKASH

Profile: Dr. Animesh Prakash (Ph.D., BHU, 2013) has been working as an Assistant Professor in Pāli at the CIHTS, Sarnath since September 2018. Previously, he was serving as an Assistant Professor in Pāli at K. J. Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies, Mumbai (A recognised centre of the University of Mumbai). His research focuses on “the application of Vipassanā meditation in Psycho-therapy.” He has been trained in Classical Tibetan language at the Rangjung Yeshe Institute, Kathmandu University and at the University of Hong-Kong, HK. Currently, he is working on the Transmission of Theravāda discourses in Tibetan Canon.

His area of research interest can be summarised under the following heads applied to the Theravāda school of Buddhism.

  • Mind and Mental Training in Early Buddhist Literature;
  • Abhidhamma Philosophy;
  • Pāli Language and Literature; and
  • Dissemination of Theravāda Discourses in Tibet.

Jasmeet Gill holds a PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University and teaches English in the Dept. of Classical and Modern Languages, Faculty of Shabda Vidya. His teaching responsibilities function around a dynamic coursework constituted of English Poetry, Modernist Fiction, Indian Writing in English, and Literary theory.

His research interests focus on the exploration of issues related to problematics of defining and practicing World Literature; navigating through the epiphanies of Literary Modernism and relationship with Art forms; and Latin American writing. He remains constantly invested in learning and practice of Phonetics, Romance Languages, and World Cinema. Experiencing privileged in the company of learners, Jasmeet envisions special interest in organizing book and film club activities and arranging essay-writing workshops.

Her research interest is centered on Modern Hindi Literature and Kavindra Ravindra and Bangla, and Comparative Study of Hindi Literature. Dr. Jyoti Singh has expertise in Chhayavad, Hindi Criticism, Linguistics, Indian and Western Poetry.

MAHESH SHARMA

Dr Mahesh Sharma has been serving as Assistant Professor of English at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS), Sarnath, since 2018. He teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages. Dr Sharma obtained his M.Phil. from the University of Rajasthan, with a research focus on Rasa Theory and Indian Aesthetics. He earned his Ph.D. in Postcolonial Theory and Literature from the Department of Indian and World Literatures, The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad.

His academic and pedagogical engagements span a wide range of interdisciplinary subjects, including Tibetan Literature in English, Indian Knowledge Systems, Indian Aesthetics, English Fiction, and Literary Theory and Criticism. Dr Sharma has guided over twenty MA dissertations on diverse and eclectic topics. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on subjects such as postcolonialism, cosmopolitanism, literary theory, and the emerging field of ‘Sorry Literature.’

In addition to his critical scholarship, Dr Sharma is an accomplished creative writer in both Hindi and English, with several published short stories that have earned him literary recognition and awards. He has actively contributed to digital education initiatives, having designed and anchored multiple Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for the Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC), EFLU Hyderabad. He also holds postgraduate certifications in the teaching of English—PGCTE and PGDTE—from EFLU.

Dr Sharma is a seasoned teacher-trainer, having conducted numerous Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs), particularly in the North-Eastern region of India. At CIHTS, he also plays key institutional roles as the Coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Research and Development Cell, and National Education Policy (NEP) initiatives. He actively promotes co-curricular engagement through student-led platforms such as the CIHTS English Club and the Documentary Club.

His current research project, a monograph titled Narrating Memory: Nostalgia and Trauma in Francophone Novels, investigates the complex identity politics of postcolonial communities—including the Harkis, pieds-noirs, rapatriés, and appelés—through the lens of collective memory, nostalgia, and trauma in postcolonial Francophone literature.

RAVI RANJAN DIWEDI

Dr. Ravi Ranjan Diwedi

Profile:  Dr. Ravi Ranjan Diwedi has completed Ph.D. in Pali from Banaras Hindu University and teaches Pali in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Faculty of Shabda Vidya at CIHTS since 23 August, 2017. His teaching area includes Pali literature, Buddhist philosophy and grammar.

His area of research interest can be summarized under the following heads: Buddhism and Human Rights, Early Buddhist Jurisprudence and Constitution of Buddhism. He has been organizing workshops and seminars from time to time to develop interests in academic fields.

DHARMADUTT CHATURVEDI

Prof. Dharmadutt Chaturvedi

Professor of Sanskrit

Profile:  After traditional graduation, Prof. Chaturvedi obtained his Master and Ph.D.degree from B.H.U. He served as the Head of Sanskrit Department at C.I.H.T.S. from 2002 to 2020. Since 2017, he has been serving as Faculty Dean of Shabda Vidya, Department of Classical and Modern Languages. His teaching and research fields are – Panini grammar, Saraswat grammar and Katantra grammar. He has deep interest in Sanskrit poetry. He has composed many poems, edited, translated and published many books. He has presented and directed many dramas in the institution. He has organized conferences, Sanskrit debate competitions, and Sanskrit workshops. He has presented many Sanskrit poems in Sanskrit poet’s conferences and many research papers in conferences organized by various universities. He has guided Ph.D. scholar and M.Phil. student. Currently He is a member of many committees. He has been editing Annual Report since 2016-17 to till now. He has published many research articles in journals.

Dr. Anirban Dash

Profile:  Dr. Anirban Dash, Associate Professor of Sanskrit, has been teaching at the UG and PG levels in the Faculty of Shabda Vidya, CIHTS since 2018. Dr. Dash has received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Sanskrit and Prakrit languages, University of Pune, Maharashtra. As an expert of Indic Manuscriptology and Paleography, he has taught ancient Indic scripts at more than 80 Universities and Institutes across India and abroad. He has been a visiting faculty in the Indology section, Department of Asian Studies, Institute for Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen (Denmark); Otani University (Japan) and Heidelberg University (Germany).

Currently, he oversees and curates a team of researchers in India who are creating a searchable electronic database from microfilms & photocopies of ancient manuscripts for Muktabodha Indological Research Institute (USA). He has authored four books and more than 30 articles in his area of specialization and his current book project is – A Buddhist Sanskrit Manual. His responsibilities also include a Coordinator, IQAC – CIHTS, Sarnath.

Currently, he is the Director of National Mission for Manuscripts, New Delhi on deputation.

DAWA SHERPA

Dr. Dawa Sherpa

Assistant Professor of Sanskrit

Profile:  Ven. Dr. Dawa Sherpa completed his Ph.D. in 2019 from CIHTS.  He has been teaching Sanskrit as a Guest Faculty in Sowa-Rigpa Department since 2014. His main interest is Buddhism in general and Tibetan-Sanskrit-Pali Buddhism in particular. He belongs to the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism and his interest also covers Tantra in Nyingmapa School, Tibetan, Sanskrit, Pali language and literature. He is involved in doing research on Buddhist scriptures and translating Buddhist texts from Sanskrit to Tibetan, Pali to Tibetan and restoring Buddhist texts from Tibetan to Sanskrit. Furthermore, his research includes comparative studies of Indian Philosophy. Currently he is translating and editing Ayurvedic Texts in Tibetan with Prof. Lobsang Tenzin, Sowa Rigpa Department. He is also independently translating Pali-Suttas into Tibetan.
