Introduction of Department

This department of Tibetan astroscience is one of the most ancient, traditional and unique knowledge amongst the ten science of Tibet. Tibetan astroscience is dating back to 3rd BC as per available literature and even further as per oral history.

In the 7th Century, Chinese astrology and astronomy come to Tibet and several parts of the Vastu shastra also prevailed during the century even from India along with Buddhist philosophy. later in the early 11th Century, Kalchakratrantra raja, its commentaries and other analogous science arrived from India which impacted marvelously in the Tibetan plateau.

In the 1993-94 academic year, the department is established keeping in view of development and sustainability of Astroscience. We are trying our best to develop and make it richer in this science from many aspects.

The department preserves the traditional Tibetan Astroscience knowledge and sustainable development in the Tibetan community, trans-Himalayan region and in the world at large.

Although it is a single or minor science, many other major lores of Tibetan also abridged in this science and we could say that the same is scatted in all the other sciences of Tibetan.

Introduction of Tibetan Astroscience

Tibetan Astroscience is not only prognosticative science, it contains multiple mechanisms of philosophy, medicine, religion, tantra, epistemology and of course culture as well. This science helps in various other knowledge to understand deeper and explicitly. Astroscience also determines the heavenly objects’ position and their impact on the living thing and non-living things. This science can be bifurcated in two sections viz, astronomical calculation and interpretation of astrology.

The Tibetan scholar also extracted other systems from neighbouring countries like China, India, Nepal, Mongolia and others as well and consequently established a new version after adding other nutshells and updating it according to the mainland knowledge and cultural aspect. from 7th – 11th century.

Astronomy deals with all the heavenly mechanisms and occultation of celestial objects which is a purely mathematical calculation. But, it is hard to comment by the mathematician only because of other spiritualistic identical mechanisms. Kalchakra tradition is deeply correlated with philosophical perceptions and tantric dimensions as well.

Astrology, according to the planetary position and adept familiarity of knowledge, the astrologer interprets an astrological report. Perfect and exact Interpretation of the reports can only be done by the adept scholar and not only after the mere completion of graduation. It needs several quintessential from the root gurus after several steps of meditation with a regular invocation practice. This practice is known as the Indian system of interpretation.

Similarly, the Chinese abridged system which is known as elementary astrology is not purely mathematical calculation, but different types of formulas used to describe the astrological result. This is not only the prognostically done, but multiple factors exist in this method as well. Since Tibet is identified as a spiritual nation, all the interpretations are done with a spiritual influence and its relations.
