Faculty of Shabda Vidya

Faculty of Shabda Vidya consists of three Departments and one Centre:

  1. Department of Tibetan Language & Literature
  2. Department of Sanskrit
  3. Department of Classical & Modern Languages (Pali, Hindi, English)
  4. Centre for Teacher Education
Language has always been an area of high debate and research in Indo-Tibetan Tradition. The Faculty of Shabda Vidya deals with one of the most profound of such panch-vidyas. While the faculty, along with the three departments, is one of the three faculties introduced when the Institute was first established, the Centre for Teacher Education, which started from 2014-2015 academic session, was established to train, and nurture teachers according to the specific orientations of Tibetan Society later. The faculty offers courses on Tibetan Language & Literature; Sanskrit; and Classical & Modern Languages at both U.G and P.G levels of Shastri (BA) and Acharya (MA). The faculty is renowned for its innovative programs like two year B.Ed; four year integrated and innovative B.A.B.Ed.; Acharya (M.A) in Tibetan Language & Literature; and Vidyavaridhi (PhD) in Tibetan Language & Literature.

Acharya (M.A) in Tibetan Language and Literature

After completion of the program, the students will be able to develop a sound critical understanding of various aspects of literary terms, forms, stylistics analysis, and critical reading of different genres like poetry, novel, short stories, and play categorized according to development of Tibetan Literature in different span and eras. The hermeneutical aspect of analysis is well taken care of as it is wrought with a profound knowledge of Tibetan Language and Literature with a social-cultural and philosophical tradition. The program also provides a strong background in Tibetan theoretical and critical tradition with philosophical dimensions. The students are also trained in the literary tradition in Tibetan literature enriched by Jatakas, Buddha’s Sermons and magnum-opus of Sanskrit literature available in Tibetan translation. Consequently, they are capable to seek opportunities in various fields of critical and creative writing, research, teaching, translation, and comparative study.
