Introduction of Sowa-Rigpa

  • Sowa-Rigpa is one of the oldest and well documented Traditional Medical System in the world dating back to many thousands of years.
  • This medical system spread around the world, specially, it was popular and widely practiced in Tibet, Indian Himalayas, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Mongolia, Russia etc.
  • Sowa-Rigpa has a very rich principles theories and practices of its own, this system became one of the cultures of many Central Asian Countries for many centuries.
  • To its credit, it has treasure house with thousands of medical treaties/books written works by ancient Sowa-Rigpa scholars of Tibet and others.
  • At present, Sowa-Rigpa is one of the traditional medical systems providing and serving public health around the world with a holistic view and approach.

Status of Sowa-Rigpa in India

  • Many countries have officially recognized this system and the Indian Government recognized this as one of the medical systems in 2010 and the official Gazette Notification was notified in the year 2017.
  • In India this system is under the administrative control of Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.
  • National commission for Indian system of medicine (NCISM) has started the very first NCISM Sowa-Rigpa NEET Under graduate examination for the academic session 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 which was successfully conducted by CIHTS.
  • Sowa-Rigpa College is currently following and implementing all the curriculum activities including syllabus as per the Gazette Notification of the Government of India i.e. Sowa Rigpa MSE

Yuthog Sowa-Rigpa Medical College and Hospital, CIHTS

  1. Yuthog Sowa-Rigpa Medical College and Hospital of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies was established in the academic Year 1993-1994.
  2. The core aims, and objective of the College are
  • to preserve and promote the tradition of Sowa-Rigpa and its practices.
  • to teach Sowa-Rigpa with Critical Observation and Experiential learning.
  • to contribute health care services to the public all around the world.
  • to provide research guidance and facilities to the researchers of Sowa-Rigpa.
  • to preserve endangered medicinal herbs and their pharmaceutical processing.
  • to enrich the system through research and interaction with other systems.
  1. It has eight different Departments as per the requirements of NCISM to run the UG program.
  2. The college offers U.G., P.G. and Ph.D programs in Sowa-Rigpa.
